When you're through changing, you're through A story is told of a man travelling on a bus with his three children. The three children were jumping about behaving very unruly. A gentleman looked at them with disdain, thinking to himself, ‘Why can’t this man control his three children? What is wrong with him?’ This man’s attitude was controlled by his perspectives. One of his perceptions was that the father obviously didn’t discipline his children. So he went to challenge the father, saying, ‘Why aren’t you dealing with these unruly children?’ The father, who appeared to be in a state of shock, looked up at the man and replied, ‘I’m sorry that my children are disturbing you and the other people on the bus, but I have just come from the hospital where their mother has passed away and I’m struggling to find a means to tell them.’ The gentleman on the bus had to suddenly change his perception of that father. Like that man, we must all learn to see life through new and different perspectives. Be willing to change your perspective. All of us need to understand that change is a process. It is not an event, something that happens once, but rather it is a constant process. The Swedish chemist Alfred Nobel amassed a fortune by inventing dynamite and other explosives used for weapons. When his brother died, a newspaper accidentally printed Alfred's obituary instead. It described him as a man who had become rich by enabling people to kill each other in unprecedented numbers. Deeply shaken, Nobel resolved to dedicate his fortune toward accomplishments that benefited humanity. Hence, the Nobel Prize. Comedian Jerry Lewis once joked that his best wedding gift was a film of the entire marriage ceremony. He said when things got really bad at home he would go into a room, close the door, run the film backwards and walk out a free man. Now I doubt that any of us will be able to read our obituary in a newspaper or that any of us want to go looking at our marriage ceremony in reverse, but all of us should re-evaluate our lives and make a conscious choice to change things. As I consider my life, there are things that I have had to change in order to become more effective. I have had to learn to work smarter, not harder. I have had to change from being a driven person to being a leading person. I have had to make changes to schedules and changes to the way I approach life. Being a single dad was not easy and I have certainly changed my opinion on how people cope in single parent families. Challenge What is it in your life that needs changing? How are you going to begin that process? Sometimes change is unpleasant, often it is hard, yet almost always it is necessary. Begin the process of change now to become the better person you want to be. What is it in your business or career that needs to change to make it more profitable? What is it in your attitude that needs to change to make you more effective?
